Plant questions and answers! This week: Are pansy roots deep or shallow? I want to plant some around the base of my roses but don’t want their roots to interfere. (Ask your plant or gardening question.)
Pansies typically have shallow roots. Their roots are stringy and can grow in masses, but they don’t have taproots and don’t tend to delve down deep into the surrounding soil.
However, I’d be careful planting anything around the base of your roses. Digging around the feet of your roses could disturb their roots and introduce disease. How about setting the pansies among your roses in pots?
