Plant questions and answers! This week: I’m going on vacation and I am not sure what to do about watering my tomato plants. They’re on my patio in pots. What do you recommend? (Ask your plant or gardening question.)
Well, that depends on how long you’ll be gone and how warm it is where you are. Tomato plants are pretty drought resistant (and may even be compelled to produce ripe fruit faster when not watered regularly) so a couple days without water is usually no problem even if it’s pretty hot. Any longer than that, though, and I’d probably have someone drop by every couple of days and give them a good watering.
If you don’t have anyone who can drop by and water your tomatoes, you could check out a drip-irrigation system with a timer. Your local garden supply store will probably have a starter kit for under $50. (Some places sell the drip irrigation kits separate from the timer, so just keep that in mind as you’re browsing.)
Have a good vacation!
